The book of Hebrews is not the enigma we usually think it is. We can be sure that the author wrote it to be understood by everyone, not just New Testament scholars. Undoubtedly, the book has a practical purpose, an aspect often lost sight of by those who get lost in theological tides. So we can also be sure that the early Christians understood it. The modern believer can also understand the book of Hebrews. The document, however, will not reveal its message easily. Its carefully woven argument requires a degree of concentration to which we are less accustomed than our ancestors were. Only when we stop and let Hebrews show us its message in its own terms can we understand and grasp it in its entirety.
